The interview process is the final step before a candidate is hired. Although the interview process is all-encompassing, the formal interview can be a game changer. After speaking with a former general manager, he was able to share some insight on the questions he used to evaluate potential coaches to join their organization. Understanding why he asked these questions will set you apart when you go into coaching interviews.
What do you think your path will look like? Where do you see yourself in three years?
Understanding how the coaching process works is very important. Getting a high-level coaching job in professional or college sports can take a long time. They are tough to obtain, and you need realistic expectations on how you will progress through your career. Ensure your answer is obtainable as you continue to work through the industry.
What side of the ball do you feel most comfortable coaching?
How confident are you as a coach? He wants to understand your flexibility and knowledge of the game. Are you malleable, and can you adapt to the ever-changing environment? He wants to know if you have the requisite coaching experience to allow you to excel in this role.
What is an area where you are trying to grow? What are you hoping to learn this season?
When you evaluate yourself as a coach, are there areas of your development that you need to change? He wants to see if you are honest about where you need to grow as a coach and where your interests lie. Great coaches are constantly trying to get better, and if you are someone that has all the answers to the test, then you probably won’t be a good fit.
Tell us about a time when you made a mistake. How did you respond?
Constructive criticism is an essential aspect of life. Nobody is perfect, and mistakes will be made during your career. Can you admit your mistakes and find a way to correct them? Be honest with your feedback and show your vulnerability. Show that you are humble and willing to put in the work to get better.
Understanding why interview questions are asked is half the battle. Make sure you are prepared to be honest and open about your journey!
