Finish Your Goals
When goals are set, learning how to finish your goals can be challenging. Remember that a goal without a plan is simply a wish.
In the book, Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done, Jon Acuff argues that perfectionism is the enemy of finishing your goals. Below are some lessons that can help you check goals off your list.
Don’t Expect Perfection
As you begin making strides towards your goal, remember that it will be difficult. More often than not, there will be setbacks or times you have to compromise. If you approach your goals accepting there will be difficult times than you are less likely to quit when they inevitably surface.
Focus on Your Progress
It can be defeating to only look forward to the finish line. Calculating the percentage of goal completion can make the remaining work feel endless. Instead, look back to remember where you started. This reminds you of all your hard work and can help encourage you to reach the finish line.
Break Your Goal into Smaller Goals
Did you know that cutting your goal in half increases your chance of success by 63%? When you set smaller goals, you shorten the distance to the finish line and that can give you the extra boost of confidence to continue. Once you finish one goal, you can move on to the next!
Don’t Live in Isolation
It can be helpful to share your goals with friends and family. They can serve as encouragement on the days you are facing obstacles and setbacks. They can also help hold you accountable and remind you of your goals when distractions occur.
Learn from Others
You can learn from others who have completed similar goals. It is likely that they have experienced similar obstacles and setbacks. Learn from their mistakes and their successes.
Don’t Be Afraid to Make Changes
When you are unhappy with your progress remember to adjust and adapt. As you are pursuing your goals, you will be learning along the way about what works best and what does not. Use your newly gained knowledge to determine if changes are needed.
